Enigmatic endings are one thing, but this is so shocking that, at first, it appears that the AER skipped a scene or failed. But what about the world and the friends you know? What happens to the great darkness? Who knows. So the game ends out of nowhere without solving the topics of the story. Learning about the ancient animal gods and how the once unified land fell apart can be intriguing and the ideas are promising.įurthermore, the whole AER: Memories of Old's folklore seems undermined by the flat main narrative, specifically by its abrupt conclusion. Ancient signboards and scrolls to do the heavy lifting in the worldwide construction department, along with a handful of NPCs. The larger than expected world of AER is intentionally empty for reasons of tradition. The exploration of the upper world seems just as light. “Simplified” would better describe these dungeons and they correspond to the general statement of AER's mission to provide players with a good time without making them do too much. One of the most involved temples requires the sizing of a multi-story tower to activate enough switches to open an underground entrance. Short, simple and pleasant, exploring them mainly involves activating nodes to open doors, although they incorporate some platforms and light puzzle solutions. The gameplay focuses only on crossing on foot or by wing. A mystical lantern acts as Auk's main tool, used to activate magical devices and illuminate ghostly images of the world's previous occupants. Like Auk, players must avoid an oncoming catastrophe by collecting pieces of a fractured artifact in three temples. Flying through the skies to unravel an ancient mystery will produce some emotions and AER can be a cool way to burn a few hours. Set in a world of floating islands, players control a chosen one with the ability to transform into a bird. Peaceful, mysterious and sterile would be appropriate descriptions for AER: Memories of Old.
